Practice in Ordinary Life
Practice is not a way to rise above life or escape the mess of being human. It is a way to meet life with a little more steadiness, honesty, and care.
The practice spaces of ordinary life
Practice happens on the cushion or in a chair. It also happens at the desk, on a trail, at the table, in the car before a difficult meeting, and in the pause before responding to an email.
A single breath. A hand on the heart. Feeling the feet on the ground. Looking out the window long enough to remember that the world is larger than the story the mind is telling. These are practices of return.
The practice ground
The deeper question is whether we can practice when someone says something that angers us, when we are tired, rushed, or grieving, and when we do not yet know what comes next.
A small practice for today
Notice one moment when the body tightens or the breath shortens. Let one conscious breath be enough. Then return to the life in front of you.
